Is a Malaga flamenco show worth seeing? My Alegría Malaga review

Jet2holidays provided my flights and accommodation, but I independently booked and paid for the Alegría flamenco show. This review is independent and all opinions are my own.

If you’re visiting Malaga for just a couple of days, you’ll probably want to fit in as much as possible. There’s the historic old town to explore, the Alcazaba and castle, the port and the beach, not to mention all the fabulous places to eat and drink in the city.

But what about experiencing some traditional Andalucian music and dance while you’re there? Is it worth setting aside part of your evening for a flamenco show, particularly when your sightseeing time is limited?

Malaga has several flamenco shows to choose from, and if you’ve never been to one before, you might not even know whether you’ll enjoy it. The last thing you want on a short break is to spend time and money on something that turns out to be disappointing.

I decided to book a one-hour performance at Flamenco y Gastronomía Alegría Malaga, near the city’s port. I went to the 6 pm show after an afternoon exploring the waterfront and Malagueta Beach, so it fitted in perfectly with my itinerary.

It turned out to be a real highlight of my visit, and I’m really glad I booked.

Here’s what to expect from the Alegría flamenco show, what I liked, and whether I thought it was worth the money.

Is a Malaga flamenco show worth it on a short trip?

I definitely think so. It’s especially worthwhile if you want to experience some of Andalucia’s traditional culture alongside Malaga’s main sightseeing attractions.

And you don’t necessarily need to dedicate an entire evening to it.

The Alegría flamenco show I attended lasted just one hour. I booked the 6 pm performance, which meant I was finished shortly after 7 pm and still had plenty of time to enjoy the evening.

With lots of bars and restaurants just a few minutes’ walk away, it was easy to combine the show with dinner or drinks afterwards.

I also thought the performance itself was fabulous, and at under £20 for my ticket, it was excellent value for money for a live performance.

The Alegria Flamenco show: my review and why it’s perfect for a short break

The Alegria Flamenco show is performed behind the restaurant of the same name. This is on Calle Vélez Málaga close to Malaga’s port.

It’s less than a five-minute walk from the Centre Pompidou Malaga.

After checking in at the desk at the entrance to the restaurant, I was taken through to the auditorium at the back of the building and shown to my allocated seat. The room is quite small, which means that even if you’re not in the front row, you’ll still be quite close to the action.

As instructed, I arrived half an hour early, which was helpful as it gave me a chance to order a drink (a very large glass of Sangria!) from the waitresses providing table service.

You can also buy some snacks to go alongside your drinks, but I didn’t.

The performance

The show started promptly at 6 pm with a beautiful solo guitar performance. There was then some singing, after which the two dancers appeared on stage.

We were then treated to some incredible dancing for much of the remaining hour. I’ve since read on Alegría’s website that its performers include national and international flamenco artists. Having seen the show myself, I’m not surprised!

The dancing was incredibly passionate and energetic, with plenty of twirling, stamping and jumping (I was sitting very close to the stage and several times I genuinely thought one of them might knock my drink over…thankfully, that didn’t happen!).

It was fascinating to watch how the dancers moved dramatically around the stage and responded to the music – and how they managed to move so energetically and the intensity of the performance.

The costumes were also beautiful, especially those worn by the main female dancer – she started in red, moved to green, and ended in black.

The hour-long performance, which seemed to fly by, ended with more guitar playing and singing, and well-justified loud applause from the audience.

Note that the venue’s website advises that shows and artists vary by day.

What I liked about this Malaga flamenco show

There were lots that I liked about this flamenco show.

The show itself

Obviously, the highlight of booking this experience is the performance itself – even with a great venue and location, if the show was poor, it wouldn’t be worth it.

But this wasn’t the case. For an hour, I watched incredibly talented performers sing, play traditional Spanish guitar, and dance. The dancing was particularly impressive: passionate, energetic, and wonderful to watch.

And the fact that the auditorium isn’t enormous means you can really appreciate the performers’ energy and skill and see the beautiful costumes from a relatively close vantage point.

The one-hour duration

When I was planning my short break, I wanted to see a flamenco performance, but I didn’t want it to take up too much of my limited time in the city.

So this show was perfect: a one-hour performance in the evening that left time to sightsee during the day and time afterwards to spend more time in the port area.

As it turned out, I thought the duration was just right. I think it’s especially ideal if you’re not sure whether you’ll enjoy it, but want to give it a go while you’re in the city.

The convenient location

Being so close to the port was a real advantage. I’d designed my itinerary so I was around the city’s waterfront, so I was on the right side of the city. I could go straight to the performance after spending time at Muelle Uno and Malagueta Beach.

If you’re following my 2 days in Malaga itinerary, I’d slot this into the second day so you won’t need to travel across the city or make a special journey to attend the performance.

The venue and table service

The performance takes place in a relatively intimate setting. You’re taken to your seat and once there, waitresses come round to take orders for drinks and snacks. You can pay by card, which makes everything very straightforward.

You can also eat at the restaurant, so you can make more of an evening of it (you need to book this separately).

And you can also book to see longer performances at the venue that include tapas or paella.

Was there anything I didn’t like about this flamenco show?

While I really enjoyed this show, I would have preferred a different seat. I was placed right at the end of a side section and was initially concerned that I would have a restricted view.

In practice, this wasn’t really a problem. The performers made good use of the whole stage and angled parts of the performance towards my side, so I didn’t feel I missed anything.

So don’t worry if you arrive and you’re not directly facing the stage!

Is the Alegría flamenco show value for money?

I thought it was excellent value for money.

I paid less than £20 for my ticket, which I thought was really good value when you appreciate you’re watching national and international artists. Coming from London, where shows can be expensive, I was happy to pay this for such a wonderful experience.

Of course, whether it’s worth paying for a flamenco performance depends on your interests. If you’re not particularly interested in music or dancing, you might prefer to spend the money on another activity.

But if you’re curious about flamenco, I think Alegría is a great introduction: it’s a relatively short, low-cost experience that will give you a sense of whether you’d like to see more if you return to Spain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Alegría flamenco show last?

The show I booked lasted for one hour. However, you can book longer shows at the same venue that also include tapas or paella. Check these out here.

Where is the Alegría flamenco show in Malaga?

The show is held at the Alegria restaurant in Calle Vélez Málaga. This is just a few minutes’ walk from the main port area in Malaga.

Is the Alegría flamenco show suitable if you’ve never seen flamenco before?

Yes, I think it’s an excellent introduction to flamenco, particularly because the performance lasts just an hour, and the auditorium is relatively small.

I’d previously seen a flamenco show during a trip to visit the Alhambra in Granada, but that venue was larger, and I wasn’t nearly as close to the performers. At Alegría, I felt I could appreciate the skill and energy of the dancers much more.

If you’ve never seen flamenco before, I think this is a great place to start.

My overall conclusion…

If you’re visiting Malaga for a short break and want to experience some traditional flamenco, I’d happily recommend the Alegría show.

It’s a fabulous hour of Spanish music and dancing, in a venue that’s conveniently located for sightseeing and close to plenty of places to eat afterwards.

And at under £20 for my ticket, I thought it was excellent value for money.
